What is CIBSE?

CIBSE is the international professional body for the building services profession. In 1976 a Royal Charter was granted allowing the Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers (founded in 1897) to amalgamate with the Illuminating Engineering Society (dating from 1909). This created CIBS: the Chartered Institution of Building Services. In 1985, the word Engineers was added to the Institution's name, giving CIBSE the title by which it is know throughout the world today: the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

The objectives of the Institution are established in its Charter: CIBSE exists to promote the art, science and practice of building services engineering for the benefit of all, and the advancement of education and research in building services engineering.

The built environment, and the whole spectrum of industries that exist to service it, is continuing to grow rapidly in importance and complexity. CIBSE is dedicated to the development of better buildings through education, research, communication and maintaining an active role in determining governmental regulations and legislation. CIBSE is the vital network that underpins much of the thought and imagination that has contributed to the evolution of building design, manufacture and maintenance.

CIBSE has a membership of over 17,000 across more than 80 countries. It provides support to all members for education, training and Continuing Professional Development. CIBSE undertakes a wide range of activities ranging from producing information services and acknowledged industry good practice publications, to running a wide range of conferences and events, and providing extensive networking activities through a series of regional and special interest groups.
